Meet the whales on Reunion Island: a unique show at the height of the season

cetaceans

Every year, from June to October, Réunion's waters become the stage for a breathtaking natural spectacle: the migration of humpback whales. Attracted by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, these giants of the sea come to breed and calve off the coast of Réunion, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe them up close.

1. Where to see whales?

Whales can be seen all around the island, but certain areas are particularly popular:

- Saint-Gilles: On the west coast, this town is an ideal starting point for whale-watching boat trips. It's also a place where whales can sometimes be spotted from the beach.
- Saint-Leu: Further south, this small town is an excellent spot for whale-watching at sea, with several service providers offering boat trips.
- Baie de Saint-Paul: Known as a favorite whale-watching area, the bay offers a spectacular backdrop for whale-watching.

2. Whale-watching trips at sea

Many service providers offer specially organized boat trips to observe whales in their natural habitat. These excursions allow you to get up close to the whales while respecting safe distances so as not to disturb them. Our guides are trained to explain the behavior of cetaceans and offer you an enriching experience that respects marine life.

Voyazil tip: Choose a service provider with the “O²CR” label (Observation Certifiée Responsable des Cétacés de La Réunion) to guarantee a sustainable experience that respects the animals.

3. Whale watching from land

If you prefer to stay on land, there are several observation points where you can see the whales from the shore. Popular viewpoints include:

- Cap La Houssaye: This rocky promontory offers stunning ocean views and is one of the best places to see whales from the shore.
- Trois Bassins cliffs: A prime spot to spot whales swimming or jumping just a few hundred meters from the coast.

4. Humpback whale behavior

Humpback whales are renowned for their spectacular acrobatics. You can witness some fascinating behaviors, such as :

- Leaping: Whales leap out of the water in impressive leaps.
- Tail slapping: They strike the surface of the water with their tails to communicate or get rid of parasites.
- Songs: Males produce mysterious songs, sometimes audible several kilometers underwater.

5. Respecting and protecting whales

La Réunion makes a point of respecting and protecting these majestic marine creatures. To avoid disturbing the whales, it is essential to follow certain rules:

- Distance: Do not approach within 100 meters of whales by boat.
- No swimming: Although it's tempting to swim with the whales, doing so can stress them or disrupt their behavior.

An unforgettable experience not to be missed

Whale watching on Reunion Island is a unique experience that leaves lasting memories. Whether you choose to go out to sea or observe these giants of the sea from the shore, the spectacle offered by these magnificent creatures is simply unforgettable.
